Selux asked children what helped them to feel better

To create a sense of well being and allay fear, Liverpool’s Alder Hey Children’s hospital deliberately created an atmosphere infused with nature and playfulness; situated in a park, light-filled and with lots of natural materials. Selux Olivio*, a striking multifunctional lighting system, blends harmoniously into this design, adding to the park theme and bestowing a feeling of calm and relaxation.

*Available in three different sizes with interchangeable reflectors for street and accent lighting applications. This flexible lighting system can be equipped with optical accessories such as honeycomb and ring louvres, coloured and elongation lenses offering further effects and control. Olivio Sistema, Candelabra and Floracion poles and brackets provide total freedom of design and flexible planning.

Cost savings of $10m. Carbon emissions slashed.

“After an expansive test of LED luminaries from various manufacturers, Cree met or exceeded the expected performance, cost savings, and sustainability goals of this project.”

After New York, Los Angeles has the second largest street lighting system in the US; 5,000 miles of streets lit by 209,000 lights. These used to take 29% of the city’s total operating budget. In 2009, Cree began rolling out the Green Streetlight programme, replacing traditional lights with their LEDway luminaries.

  • Cost savings from the upgrade meant the investment would be repaid in just seven years.
  • By the eighth year, the new lighting would contribute to annual savings of $10 million.
  • Project predicted a 63% energy reduction and $60,000 savings in maintenance.
  • Carbon emissions reduced by approximately 40,500 tons per year, equal to 6,700 less cars on the road.

Sensitive lighting amplifies unique architectural features

Hamburg’s new port promenade, designed by Zaha Hadid’s London office, connects St. Pauli with UNESCO heritage port buildings and demanded customised night lighting. “The technical support we received from Selux was a defining factor in the successful completion of this extraordinary project.” explained Volker Augener from LSBG.

The strictness of the architecture called for the staircases, resembling small amphitheaters, to be emphasised with direct light, while the upper promenade is illuminated with reserved light. The effects have exceeded expectations, turning the area into a key new visitor attraction.
